Christmas Eve in the Village

oceanside_christmasI skipped a blog day on Christmas in favor of spending time with my guy and rediscovering the joy of making homemade bread (no machine).  But we did get out in the evening before and enjoyed the low tide at the end of the day, as did a few families who’d made their way to the area to have a different holiday.  Many of the usual visitors did not make their way through the coast range and Oceanside was a bit of a ghost village.  Even the US Mail wasn’t getting through.

Gray Gray Gray We’re Ready for Sun

Even the courting and nesting Swallows are pausing for thought…spring has not sprung in Oceanside. Harrumph.

Loving the Gentler Days

The long Winter of 2007/08 is showing signs of yielding to Spring. Thought I’d celebrate by starting to rotate the Oceanside Village Voice web site header.

This month’s pick-ture honors quiet early mornings in Oceanside and its ever-present surf. When the surf is really big, it’s treacherous. But when it’s good, it’s lovely. The two local surfers headed to the beach in this early morning shot include Oceansiders Bryce Olson and Steve Macartney.

Rain Mixed With Snow

Song Sparrow in Winter Morning at Three Arch Rocks
It’s Sunday afternoon. The sun has been out much of the day. Despite the closure of the Wilson River Highway for the weekend, I met families on the beach this morning who had braved black ice on Highway 26 to make their way out to Oceanside Beach. They were rewarded with the long intense rays of the winter sun on glassy blue-green water and gravely beaches. The tunnel is still full of driftwood from the December storms but passable with a little extra care.

It’s rained/snowed a few times. When the sun returns, you won’t find me blogging. Oops! Gotta go now. Hope you get some sun on your face too wherever you are today.

It’s Why We’re Here

and it’s why I got up before the crack of dawn last Friday. The moon was at its closest point to the earth a few days ago, brilliantly illuminating the beaches and seascapes, hills and neighborhood on a still, crisp and cloudless night. All this and fresh coffee too, before the workday hum started.
