Bay City Arts Center Film Festival Call for People & Gear

I thought this mini-film festival sounded fantastic and wanted to share this excerpt from their current newsletter.  I’m going to find that 8mm camera I’ve had stored for years and see if I can contribute to someone’s masterpiece.  From the BCAC:

Coming Up April 3 & 4 – your help needed now!

The Anti-Digital Revolution!

We are mobilizing resources in our community to bring a mini-film festival to Tillamook County April 3 & 4. The festival will focus on avant-garde artists who use celluloid as a creative medium without modern digital techniques. We need your support/donations:

  • Cameras (8, super 8 or 16 mm, loaned or donated). Check your closets, check with your family. These are the cameras we used to make family films “back when I was a kid.” (Previous emails requested projectors, but 2 people came through for us and donated an 8 mm, a super 8 mm, and one 16 mm!)
  • Donated footage in any format (old, recycled, discarded, undeveloped…), pieces of super 8, 16 or 35 mm film strips, celluloid odds and ends, etc.
  • If you have other materials, like screens or equipment that can help us with projections for these formats, please contact Victor for possible donations/loans
  • Artists and members of our community who would like to participate or volunteer for this event. We need at least 5 volunteers to help prepare for the event (organizing, emails, event promotion, etc.) and 10 volunteers for the event.

Why is this event important?

It can put Tillamook on the map . Victor Waterhouse (Wouters) helped Chris May start the International Experimental Cinema Exposition (TIE) from scratch in 1998; TIE has since become a well-established non-profit organization with regularly scheduled events in cities across the country and beyond (for example, in the last 6 months: Argentina, Austria, Canada, Uruguay)

It can establish a dialogue between older artists and the younger generations that are “rediscovering” non-digital formats. Friendships and projects have sprung across the globe, defying generational and physical distances (for example the widows of filmmakers getting involved in preservation efforts, and grandfathers rummaging through their basements to rescue a forgotten Super 8 projector and teaching their grandkids how to use it.)

It can provide inspiration and artistic collaboration . Younger artist are usually puzzled when they learn that there is no sound for 8mm footage, and this has opened the dialogue with local DJs and bands, for example, to do a collaborative presentation with live music in order to create a certain atmosphere or to convey a message

BCAC can offer you a receipt for your donated or loaned items. Please contact Victor (720-290-8741) if you have questions. And let’s make this happen!

Lisa Phipps Moves on to E.D. Position at Tillamook Estuaries Partnership

For anyone not on the Oceanside Neighborhood email list…

Oceansiders, Below my signature is a message from Lisa Phipps, who has taken a new job and will be leaving Tillamook County. We will miss her but I’m sure that we will help her in her estuaries partnership role as much as we can. Regards, Jud (Randal)

Subject: Big news (from my perspective!)Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 11:11:01 -0800 From: “Lisa Phipps” To: “Judson Randall” , “Guy Sievert” , “Gary and Carla Albright” , “Sportsman’s Pub-N-Grub” , “Jim Carlson (Netarts CPAC Chair)” , “Dotson” , , “Howard Goodman” , “Amy Gallant” , “Waylon” ,

Hi, All, Well, the news I was hoping to tell you has come to fruition. I was offered the Executive Director position with the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership. My last day here will be March 6th. It is only fitting that my final meeting of my career here is with the Chairs of the CPACs that day. I am so proud of all of the work that all of you are doing. The CPACs are such a great resource for your communities, for my office and for the Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners. They are great ways for the people to stay connected to each other and to what is happening in the county. I am so proud of the commitment your members have made and especially your executive boards. It has been my pleasure to be a part of the process. And in this new role, I plan on using the CPACs for outreach and education on different issues affecting the watersheds in their communities – if you have me, that is. Even though I have weened myself from the CPACs over the last 5 months, I still wake up on Saturdays thinking there is somewhere I am supposed to be. I sure would appreciate it you would pass this along to your membership. There is no way I will be able to get to everybody on my own. Again, I am proud of all of you! Thank you for being one of the biggest highlights of my career! Lisa

Oceanside Water District Board Meeting Feb 17, 2009

The regular month meeting of the Oceanside Water District Board of Commissioners will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 17 at the Oceanside Community Club on Pacific Avenue.  The meeting agenda includes ongoing and new business.  Retention and recruitment of Board Commissioners, proposed amendments to district personnel policies, reports on OWD statutory requirements to provide service and other issues will be covered.  A full meeting agenda can be obtained at the district office.

I mentioned recently that the special district elections are coming up in May.  Four of the five board seats are up for election.  I’m sad to share the news that long time board member Tona Mortensen has shared her intention not to run for reelection and will be sorely missed by the district.  She has served on the OWD board for over ten years.  Please consider helping your community out by stepping up and throwing your hat in the ring for the May elections.

If you’d like more information about the meeting or about the process of filing for election please contact the OWD Office Manager Tami Walker at 503.842.6462.

Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln

The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial

Happy Birthday Mr. Lincoln, and George Washington too.  Remember when both presidents had their own holiday, and so did we?

I’ve had an usually large dose of government recently.  I’ve just returned from Japan this week where I met with local and prefecture (state) government officials, university and private industry, in part about economic development and the software industry.  We share the same challenges where governments are concerned; with economies failing, crisis must include getting much smarter about the investments we make to provide the greatest possible public benefit.  The trip left me with much to think about and, as always, happy to be home.

WEBS on the Web

Webs logo

I’m adding a new link to the OVV Community Resources blog roll today, Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach & Sea (WEBS).

From their web stite entitled “Netarts Bay Today”;  Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach & Sea (WEBS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization made up of volunteers interested in creating opportunities for Netarts Bay area residents, property owners, interested citizens and visitors to learn about and experience the unique natural and cultural history of the area between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout on the northern Oregon Coast, through education.

WEBS is the brainchild of the late Jim Mundell, longtime Netarts resident and community leader, who dreamed of an organization that would raise awareness, provide learning opportunities, and encourage stewardship for the natural and cultural resources of the Netarts Bay area, between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout on the spectacular Oregon Coast.

Fantastic project, excited to see them extend their presence and activities onto the web!
